Biosecurity information and quarantine guidelines for Korean foods have been prepared to enhance general understandings on items that Koreans wish to bring into NZ and streamline their entry procedure.

All agricultural items (Food), prescription medicines and general goods are subject to the control of the Customs and you need to meet all statutory requirements before leaving the border.

Rebecca Kim wishes to provide the customs formalities and compliance information on these each three different items with three rounds.

이번 회에는 1차 식품 통관 관련한 내용입니다.
Today, we will discuss about quarantine guidelines on the Korean foods that Koreans wish to bring into NZ.

“이번 오클랜드 본관에서 제가 첫 리서쳐로 맡게 되었습니다.
Rebecca Kim is the Research and Public Affairs Manager at the Consulate of the Republic of Korea.

교민들에게 가장 필요한 것이 어떤 정보일까 라는 것들을 고민하던 중에 아 이제 뉴질랜드에 입국하시는 분들이 방문객만 1년에 한 10만명 정도가 방문하고 계세요.
There are around 100,000 Korean people visiting NZ every year and I believe that the quarantine guidelines on popular Korean foods will provide them useful guideline on their arrival.


첫째는 식품 통관정보 왜냐하면 많은 분들이 사실 저희 어머님도 그렇고 저의 아는 분도 그렇고 한국에서 많이 떠나 있다 보니까 음식을 많이 가지고 오고 싶어 하세요.
Many Koreans who I interviewed with indicated that they wish to bring their favourite Korean foods here.

그런데 뉴질랜드는 엄청 까다롭대더라 그 정보 하나만으로 어떤 들은 아예 무서워서 아무것도 못가지고 왔다고 하시고 어떤 분들은 지식 없이 가지고 오고 싶은 것은 다 가져오셨는데 이거는 반입 불가 품목이라서 아깝게도 눈물을 흘리면서 놓고 갔다는 분도 계시고요.
However, due to lack of information on customs formalities about food, some people are too sacred to bring any food into NZ and some are just embarrassed or upset by being rejected to bring the food they wish to bring.

휴대품 그래서 일반 방문객들이나 여행자들이 가져오시는 휴대품 정보 세관을 통과하실 때 어떤 정보가 필요하신지 어떤 정보를 알아 두시면 좋은지 1차 식품, 2차는 의약품, 3차는 휴대품으로 나눠서 각각 정보를 제공하려고 계획하고 있습니다.

Thus, I would like to provide customs compliance information with three series in the following order: food, medicines and general goods.

가장 크게 이제 많이 교민들이 가지고 오시는 식품류에 대해서 중점적으로 이야기를 나눴습니다 .
I would like to talk about the brief information on most popular food that Koreans are interested in bringing in.

그래서 저희가 나눈게 식물류, 생선류, 육류 낙농제품 그 다음에 네토르트 제품 그 다음에 주류 이 여섯 가지로 나눴는데요.
I categorise by six broadly.
• Plants and plant products,
• Salt and freshwater products
• Meat
• Dairy products
• Retort packed health supplements
• home made alcohols


그 다음에 숙성 안 된 장아찌라든가 파김치 이런 것들 가져오시는 분들이 있으시고요. 흔히 즐겨 먹는 돼지고기가 함유된 소시지 같은 것들이 있어요.
Other top five Korean food items that are rejected the most are apple, Korean Ginseng with Honey, Fresh vegetables, Pork sausages, Black Bean.


그래서 본인이 실제로 고의성이 없더라도 깜빡 잊고 부주의로 라도 신고를 하셔야 할 품목이 있는데도 신고를 하지 않으신 경우에는 400불로 부가가 되고 있습니다.

People failing to declare biosecurity risk goods can receive an instant fine of $400, be fined up to $100,000 and/or face up to five years in prison.

본인이 음 신고만 하시면요.
그게 가능하면 조사하고 돌려 드릴 수도 있고요.
When you declare any items that are prohibited in New Zealand, you are likely to have five choices:

■The items will be inspected and returned to you
■The items will be held for you and returned when you leave the country (unless, for example, you arrive by air but are leaving on a cruise ship)
■The items will be re-shipped at the owner's expense
■The items will be destroyed at no cost to the owner.
■The items will be treated at the owner's expense. The owner will need to make arrangements to collect the items once treated. Please be aware that some items cannot be treated.
아니면 본인이 또 이런 경우도 있어요 본인한테 소중한 음식이에요. 그런데 교민 분들은 안 된다고 하니깐 난 뺏겼구나 이걸 놓고 가야 되겠구나 하시는 분들이 계시는데요.
Please don’t be disappointed to be advised the items that you wish to bring are not allowed. You still explore the options of being treated the item. Please ask Quarantine Inspector whether the items can be treated.

방역 가능한 옵션이 있어요.
모든 음식이 다 그런 거 아니지만 방역 가능한 품목이 있으시거든요.
혹시 아까워서 이거는 굉장히 내 친척이 신경 써서 주신 건데 이걸 버리고 가다니 안타까우실 경우에는 방역이 가능하신지 물어 보실 수 있으세요.

실제로 알아보니깐 방역비용이 생각보다 비싸지 않아요.

한 건당 25불이시거든요.
As at May 2010, the fee for treatment is $25 per item and will incur extra $10 for an additional item.

그리고 추가하실 때 10불 정도 더 내시면 방역 하셔서 방역이 가능한 품목은 가져오실 수 있어요.

그런 옵션도 고려해 보실 수 있으실 것 같아요.”
