Te Hono gathers momentum as start of construction nears
Avondale’s future community hub, Te Hono, is another step closer. Following a competitive retendering process, Auckland Council has announced CMP Construction as the lead contractor for the project.
Choosing the right construction partner
Richard Davison, Priority Location Director, Auckland Urban Development Office, is proud to reveal that CMP Construction will be building Te Hono and believes they are the right team for the job.
“We had 20 interested companies and shortlisted four outstanding parties,” says Mr Davison.
"CMP Construction came out on top, not just for their expertise but for their vision. They are aiming to exceed our social procurement targets, will create new jobs within the local community and are committed to achieving at least a Green Star 5 sustainability rating for the build.” |

Mr Davison says that while the council always expects its construction partners to build great buildings, there is a further expectation that developments like Te Hono should also help to foster strong communities, promote environmental sustainability and generate economic opportunities.
“Te Hono will be more than just a building. It’s a new modern library, an upgraded town square, and shared spaces designed to bring the community together.”
A familiar face in Avondale
Taryn Crewe, the council’s General Manager, Parks and Community Facilities is pleased that a construction team with an existing connection with Avondale will be building Te Hono.
“After more than 30 years’ in the construction business, this New Zealand company has ample experience,” says Mrs Crewe.
“I think of special interest to the people of Avondale, is that CMP completed the Kāinga Ora Community Lane development. This means they are familiar with the local community and already have an affiliation with the Avondale area.” |
“Te Hono is about providing the community with an inclusive public space that makes the Avondale neighbourhood an even better place to live, work and play.”
Mrs Crewe acknowledges retendering caused a small delay to this important project but says that retendering was a good financial management decision made in the best interests of the Avondale community, the environment and ratepayer investment.
Building momentum
Kay Thomas, Whau Local Board Chair, emphasises that the project is about delivering on the aspirations of the local community.
“We’re excited to see the retendering process paying off, with construction about to get underway,” she says.
“Te Hono will be a place to connect, celebrate and build community for generations to come and I’m looking forward to watching our community hub become a reality as momentum speeds up.”
What’s next?
Construction of Te Hono is scheduled to begin in spring 2025, with doors expected to open in mid-2027. When complete, Te Hono will offer a modern library, welcoming public spaces, and a revitalised town square, the beating heart of Avondale.
