Wet start to 2016 but fine weather to follow

The first weekend of 2016 brought rainy weather to many parts of the country. The highest rainfall total over the weekend was 138 mm recorded at a station inland of Westport.
Many drought-stricken areas received some useful rainfall totals as well -
Methven recorded the most rainfall in Canterbury with 63 mm. Further north, Masterton received 51 mm through the weekend, and early Monday morning.
"A ridge of high pressure is now moving onto the country, pushing away the weekends' rain," said MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn. "Most places should see some fine weather over the coming few days. However, a few showers are expected around Northland, Coromandel Peninsula, western Bay of Plenty, as well as the far south. The odd shower could also be seen about the Canterbury High Country."
The weekends' rain was caused by a moist northeasterly flow, bringing humid air from the tropics. This was then pushed away by a cool southerly change.
"Temperatures in many places around the country are currently below normal for January, due to the southerly flow. As the ridge builds over the country, temperatures should gradually return to normal during the week," Flynn said.
The fine weather is not set to last, however. A low pressure system approaches the country from the Tasman Sea at the end of the week. This should bring rain or showers to most places by the weekend, though there will be lesser amounts in the east of both islands.

"고압 능선은 지금, 지난 주말의 비가 내린 날씨를 멀리 밀어 버리고 전국적으로 이동하고 있다." MetService 의 기상 학자 클레어 플린씨가 말했다.
"대부분의 장소에서는 앞으로 며칠 동안 좋은 날씨를 선보일 것이다. 그러나 노스랜드, 코로만델 반도, 베이 오브 플렌티 , 그리고 먼 남쪽 지역에는 일부 소나기가 예상된다. 켄터베리 고지대에서도 일부 소나기를 만날 수 있다."
지난 주말의 비는 열대 지방으로부터의 습한 북동 흐름에 의해 발생했다. 이는 시원한 남쪽으로부터의 바람에 의해 멀리 밀려났다.
"전국 여러 곳에서의 온도는 현재 평상시 1월 날씨이다. 점차적으로 이번 부에는 기온이 정상으로 돌아와야 한다. " 플린씨는 덧붙였다.
이러한 좋은 날씨는 타스만 바다로부터 접근하는 저기압으로 인해 주말이면 전국 대부분이 비나 소나기가 내리는 궂은 날씨가 될 것으로 예상된다.
