WATCH: Auckland's future revealed

Auckland’s city centre is one of the fastest growing parts of the city, and it’s poised for its next phase of regeneration.

This ‘fly-over’ video illustrates the potential for improving our city centre in a way that benefits Auckland’s growing population of residents, workers, and visitors.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says, "We are returning our waterfront to the people of Auckland, and creating a vibrant and attractive central city and waterfront for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

With pedestrian numbers on Queen Street doubling in just four years, retail spending at $1.8 billion per year, and employment, student and resident numbers at record levels; the central city needs to be more more walkable, with better public spaces and improved transport connections.

The plan builds on several years of successful planning and revitalisation. Wynyard Quarter is now an award-winning neighbourhood of parks, restaurants and bars, apartments and offices; and the City Rail Link construction is now well underway.

Hosting the 36th America’s Cup and APEC in 2021 is Auckland’s next chance to continue the city’s transformation. In addition to the dedicated America’s Cup facilities and other road projects happening in the city centre now, Auckland Council will also be fast tracking several projects in the downtown area to support a successful event and leave a lasting legacy for Aucklanders.
