Today we are reporting 21,616 new community cases, 960 people in hospital with the virus, and two COVID-19 related deaths.

Today’s case number is higher than yesterday’s number however it’s not unexpected to see variability. It’s also not unusual to have a lower number of tests on a weekend compared to the number of tests on a weekday and this can have a follow on impact for cases identified. The three day rolling average of community cases is currently 17,136 and the seven day rolling average is 19,226.

Getting boosted remains one of the best defences against Omicron. We know the Omicron variant can cause serious illness and death either directly or by its impact on other health conditions, particularly for our older and more vulnerable New Zealanders.

Getting boosted will not only reduce your risk of severe illness, but it will also help to protect our most vulnerable communities.

COVID-19 related deaths

Sadly, we are today reporting the deaths of two people with COVID-19. Of these people, one death occurred in Southern and one in Capital & Coast DHBs. Both people, one man and one woman, were aged over 70.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the patients’ family and friends.

Out of respect, we will be making no further comment.

Testing

Testing continues to play an important part in our response to COVID-19.

If you’re symptomatic, please stay at home and get a test.

If you’re unsure whether or not to get a test, please contact your health professional or Health on 0800 358 5453 and follow advice.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you are required to isolate for 7 days. You do not need to be retested after your initial positive result. If you still have symptoms after 7 days, stay home until you feel better and then wait another 24 hours.

Your household contacts should also stay at home, have tests at day 3 and 7 or if they develop symptoms.
