Urbanesia in your hood!
Urbanesia, Auckland Council’s celebration of the best contemporary Pacific arts and culture in the world’s largest Polynesian city, begins on Friday 11 November 2016 with Urban Legends by photographer Edith Amituanai.
Amituanai invites the audience to go on a train journey from Henderson to Avondale. The adventure will include performances from up-and-coming singer Tommy Nee and performance artist Jahra Rager. From Avondale station, stroll to the All Goods Gallery to view exhibitions by a range of Pacific artists including Salome Tanuvasa, Lana Lopesi, Siliga Setoga, Natasha Matila-Smith, UNIFORM, Asinate Moa, Maila Urale, Catherine Hunt, Johnson Witehira and more.
On Saturday 12 November, X Factor winner Beau Monga will top a bill of exciting young artists at Pacific Day Out in Cadness Reserve, Northcote from 11am.
These include the Sistema Aotearoa children’s orchestra and the Saintz Up Performing Arts School choir with Selevasio Tu'ima – the break-out performer of this year’s Stand Up Stand Out competition. There will also be free kids arts workshop activities and Pacific food at the event.
If you’re in the south, MCs will be spitting rhymes straight from the top of the dome at the Freestyle Rap Battle Olympics, part of King Kapisi’s event, The Saturday Morning Hip Hop Show in the Ōtara Town Centre, Saturday from 9am.
