Adopting a dog


First time dog owners

If you are a first time dog owner please see the New dog owners page. This will ensure that you understand the implications of owning an animal and help you choose a pet that is compatible with you and your lifestyle.


Pre-adoption checks for dogs

Before dogs are put up for adoption, we make sure that they have been:
•given health checks
•neutered
•registered and
•micro-chipped.

Dogs are vaccinated before they leave the shelter, but puppies will require booster shots.


Checking your property

An animal management officer will visit you at home to check that your property is:
•fenced appropriately and
•an of adequate size for the dog you are adopting.

We will let you know if your property is suitable and whether you can continue with the adoption. We have the right to refuse an adoption if we believe it is not in the best interests of the animal.

If you live in rental accommodation you must get a letter from the property owner, giving their approval to have the dog on the property.

Adopting other animals

If you want to adopt an animal other than a dog, we may need to perform a property check. We will let you know as part of the adoption process whether this is necessary.

We have the right to refuse an adoption if we believe it is not in the best interests of the animal.
 



 
Our shelter staff can help you choose a pet that is compatible with your lifestyle and home. There are some steps to follow before you take your new pet home.

Property check

If you are adopting a dog, we will visit your property to check that it is suitable, e.g. it is fenced and the right size. If you rent your home, you need a letter from your landlord giving their approval to have the dog on the property.

We may not need to perform a property check if you are adopting an animal other than a dog, but we will let you know during the adoption process.

Once we check your property, we will let you know if it is suitable for the animal and whether you can continue with the adoption. If we believe the adoption is not in the best interests of the animal, we may refuse your application.
