Observe the CBD liquor ban

Auckland Council and the Police are encouraging people to enjoy the hospitality that the central city is offering this weekend, but is reminding everyone that there is a liquor ban in place across most of the CBD.

Auckland Council Licensing and Compliance Manager James Jefferson says there are a myriad of great bars and restaurants to visit but people cannot drink alcohol in the CBD unless they are on licensed premises.

“The liquor ban stretches from Upper Queen Street to the waterfront, then to Halsey Street in the west and The Strand to the east. These bans are in place to ensure everyone enjoys the Rugby World Cup festivities in a safe and welcoming environment.”

Police and council staff will be ensuring visitors to the CBD area are adhering to the liquor bans in place.

Council staff will also be visiting all off-license premises to make sure they are passing on the liquor ban message to people purchasing alcohol within the CBD liquor ban area.

Those breaching these liquor ban areas will be required to leave the area and discard their liquor immediately.

Mr Jefferson says the council is encouraging people to come and celebrate all that the Auckland CBD has to offer and return home safely after a good night out.

If the new Captain Cook Wharf Fanzone extension is used this weekend it will not be licensed.
