Stage one of the Arthur Grey Low Traffic Area trial in Onehunga will continue over the next two weeks so that Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board can receive more information and consider community feedback before deciding on next steps for the project.

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods are low speed, low volume, people-friendly areas that allow vehicles access but prevent them from dominating or using the location as a short-cut.

The trials have been taking place around Arthur Street and Grey Street in Onehunga and Eastview Road in Glen Innes, backed by a grant awarded to the local board by Waka Kotahi – the New Zealand Transport Authority – as part of the national Innovating Streets for People Pilot Fund.

The local board agreed to continue the trial after Auckland Transport advised it would take another two weeks to gather the necessary data to inform members of changes to the way people are commuting in and around the Low Traffic Neighbourhood and to read through community feedback.

Staff will go back to the board with the data it has gathered and feedback analysis to help members make an informed decision on next steps for the project.

“It is critical that we get enough information and feedback to make the best decisions possible for our communities, so we ask people to be patient and go online to tell us what they think by completing the new updated survey focused on the Stage 1 layout currently installed,” says Local Board chair Chris Makoare.

Safer roads for all users and better-connected neighbourhoods are key outcomes expected from the project and the board is especially keen to hear:

• residents thoughts on stage one of the trial
• how residents feel about road safety, traffic speeds/volumes and sense of community.
