International Travel and Migration: June 2015 – Media Release
Visitor arrivals to New Zealand numbered 177,000 in June 2015, up 9 percent on June 2014, Statistics New Zealand said today. In the June 2015 year, visitor arrivals totalled 2.99 million, up 7 percent from the previous year.
"China, Australia, and the United States contributed the biggest visitor increases for both the June month and year," population statistics manager Vina Cullum said. "These three countries are our biggest visitor sources, supplying 61 percent of all arrivals in the June 2015 year."
More overseas trips by New Zealand residents
New Zealand-resident travellers departed on 220,800 overseas trips in June 2015, up 7 percent from June 2014. The annual total was 2.34 million, up 4 percent. Residents took more trips to Australia, the United States, Fiji, and Indonesia compared with the June 2014 year.
Little change in the net gain of migrants
New Zealand had a seasonally adjusted net gain (more arrivals than departures) of 4,800 migrants in June 2015. Net migration has been fluctuating around this level for 11 months.
For the third month in a row, there was a seasonally adjusted net gain of 100 migrants from Australia. Before April 2015 there had not been a net gain in migrants from Australia in over 20 years (since 1991).
Annual permanent and long-term migration showed a record net gain of 58,300 migrants in the June 2015 year. This resulted from 115,700 migrant arrivals, and 57,400 migrant departures.
Of the migrant arrivals in the June 2015 year:
- 64 percent were aged 15–34 years
- 24,100 were from Australia, with two-thirds being New Zealand citizens
- 13,500 were from the United Kingdom, with most having work visas or New Zealand citizenship
- 13,300 were from India, with three-quarters having student visas
- 10,300 were from China, with about half having student visas.
