New collection routes might mean an earlier bin pick up for your house

Auckland Council has signed new contracts for waste collections across mainland Auckland for the next 10 years.

Rubbish collectors will be using new and improved routing, so residents may notice the rubbish truck arriving at a different time of the day.

Please ensure you place your bin out by 7am on your collection day to avoid missing your pick-up.

This is a huge step forward in the council’s move to make our domestic waste collection services consistent across the region and reduce waste.

Our new suppliers will gradually take over recycling collection services as our existing contracts expire and will also begin collecting food scraps from 2023.

Refuse collections are the first cab off the rank, with the new supplier in North and West Auckland already taking over collections since July 2020. Central, East, and South Auckland are due to change suppliers on 30 November 2020.

Having a single collector for all kerbside services makes it more efficient to plan routes and resolve customer issues. Parul Sood, General Manager for Waste Solutions, shares more about the significance of this change, saying,

“The new contracts have an increased focus on customer satisfaction. There’s also waste minimisation objectives in the contracts. By having all three services under the same collector, they won’t lose out when they successfully reduce waste to landfill and improve rates of recycling.”

We are also rolling out electric trucks for kerbside collections. The first one joined the Waiheke team earlier this year, and the next one is heading to Papakura soon.

When food scraps collections are introduced in 2023, all food scraps trucks will be electric.

Meet your new collectors:

  • North Shore and West Auckland: Northern Environmental, a joint venture between Smart Environmental and Northland Waste
  • Auckland Central: Green Gorilla
  • Auckland East and South: Waste Management
  • AIMS will continue to collect rubbish and recycling in the inner city centre

Before amalgamation, the different councils had their own systems for managing waste, and in some areas no inorganic collection was available and the methods to collect recycling differed.

Auckland Council has been standardising services across the region, while also setting a goal of zero waste to landfill by 2040. Currently, there’s an average of 10,000 tonnes of recycling and 15,000 tonnes of rubbish collected each month across the region.
