Community Bike Fund open for applications
The Auckland Transport Community Bike Fund is now open for applications, with funding available for local groups to support cycling initiatives and projects.
The fund is available to support community groups who are interested in encouraging cycling within their local area in Auckland. This can be used for events, activities and the development of resources and information for their neighbourhoods.
"Many community organisations have great ideas to get more people on their bikes, and we are keen to work with them to deliver some creative projects that encourage more people to ride bikes more often," says Zane Bray, Senior Walking and Cycling Coordinator.
"We are really committed to promoting cycling as a transport choice and by enabling these groups, we hope even more people will consider riding a bike as a great option to get around Auckland and really activate our cycling infrastructure."
MPHS Community Trust, who have previously received a grant from the fund, run guided bike tours in the Henderson area around the Twin Stream's cycleway.
"We are very grateful for receiving the Auckland Transport Community Bike Fund as this helped us tremendously," says Tina Samuelu, Community Coordinator for the Trust.
"To run this guided bike tour, we can showcase our Taonga with younger people and families in our local area. It's great being able to provide information about our Harakeke (Flax Garden), Te Maara Oranga Garden (Ronga/Medicinal trees) and artwork.
"Then to finish off with a talk on our Long-tailed bats (Pekapeka) that have been located in this area."
Grants between $300 to $5000 are available to the community groups, with applications open from today until Sunday 29 September.
