Bach Musica NZ invites you to a romantic journey through Bohemia & Germany with favourite music of two magnificent composers from the 19th century.

The evening will begin with Antonín Dvořák’s Biblical Songs, which are often lauded as the composer’s best. Czech soprano Eva Urbanová says, “Even if Dvorak had only written his Biblical Songs and nothing else, it wouldn’t have mattered. Whenever I get the chance to sing them, I feel like I’m in heaven.” In Bach Musica NZ’s performance Swedish mezzo soprano Catrin Johnsson will be the soloist.

The second half of the concert features Franz Schubert’s Mass No. 5 in A Flat Major, also called his Missa Solemnis. In this late 45-minute long work Schubert reflected on life and death. He regarded it as one of his finest, most substantial settings. In fact, in a letter to his friend Joseph von Spaun in December 1822, Schubert himself contemplated dedicating the mass to the Emperor or Empress, “for it has turned out well”.

Bach Musica NZ is delighted to welcome back international soprano Morag Atchison and mezzo soprano Catrin Johnsson. The award winning vocal pair will be joined by one of Australia’s finest lyric coloratura tenors, Henry Choo and young Samoan bass Joel Amosa who has already won several awards in both New Zealand as well as Australia. 

Under the baton of internationally acclaimed conductor and Music & Artistic Director, Rita Paczian, this exciting concert is one not be missed!
