Public transport fare changes: what they mean for you

A new simpler fares system for all bus and train services (except SkyBus services) starts on Sunday 14 August.

How it works

Fares are based on the number of zones you travel through. Instead of paying a separate fare for each bus or train you travel on, you pay for one journey from A to B.

You can use up to 5 buses or trains within 4 hours, just ensure you transfer between each trip within 30 minutes.

Tag on and off each bus or train and simply count the number of zones you travel through to find your fare.   

What it might mean for you

Here are some example journeys to show you how you might save on your travel with the new simpler fares.

Albany to Newmarket

If you’re an adult travelling from Albany to Newmarket, you’d catch the Northern Express from Albany to Britomart, then the train from Britomart to Newmarket.

Old system

  • Albany to Britomart: $4.90 for four stages
  • Britomart to Newmarket: $2.50 for one stage, minus $0.50 transfer discount

Total cost: $6.90

Simpler fares system

  • Albany to Britomart $4.90 for three zones
  • Britomart to Newmarket: $0.00 as you don’t cross another zone for this leg

Total cost: $4.90

Ōtāhuhu to Karangahape Road

As an adult travelling from Ōtāhuhu to K’ Road, you’d catch a train from Ōtāhuhu Station to Britomart, then the CityLink bus to K’ Road.

Old system

  • Ōtāhuhu to Britomart: $4.10 for three stages
  • Britomart to K Road: $0.50 city fare (minus $0.50 transfer discount)

Total cost: $4.10

Simpler fares system

  • Ōtāhuhu to Britomart: $3.10 for two zones
  • Britomart to K’ Road: $0.00 as you don’t cross another zone for this leg.

Total cost: $3.10
