The Tāmaki Herenga Waka Festival in 2016
The Māori history, heritage and contemporary culture of Tāmaki Makaurau will be centre stage in a new festival on Auckland’s waterfront.
The first Tāmaki Herenga Waka Festival will take place on Auckland Anniversary Weekend 2016 on Queens Wharf and on the water.

Festival activities
Events will include:
- waka
- performances by contemporary Māori artists
- kapa haka
- workshops and talks
- Māori crafts and kai
- storytelling focusing on traditional navigation
- a ‘Koro Lounge’, where pākeke (older visitors) can sit down, relax and have a cup of tea.
Dates and times
- Saturday 30 January - Monday 1 February 2016
- Queens Wharf
- Free entry
The free, family-friendly festival will also have waka races and opportunities for people to try paddling a waka and see waka hourua (double-hull sailing waka) on the Waitematā.
A festival for Auckland
Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) worked with Tāmaki Makaurau mana whenua to create the festival.
ATEED General Manager Destination Vivien Bridgwater says it will be the missing piece in the jigsaw of Auckland’s other cultural festivals – Pasifika, Diwali, Lantern and midwinter’s Matariki.
“Tāmaki Makaurau is culturally rich and diverse and its unique Māori identity distinguishes it from other cities in the world. This festival is a chance for Aucklanders and visitors to learn more about Māori heritage and contemporary culture of Tāmaki Makaurau.”
