Beautiful beaches, a bustling waterfront and rich local heritage are a few of the features that make the Ōrākei Local Board area a popular destination.
Summer is the perfect time to head to Mission Bay for fish and chips by the iconic Mission Bay Fountain, stroll around the waterfront to St Heliers or visit Takaparawhau-Bastion Point, home to the art deco tomb and memorial garden of former prime minister Michael Joseph Savage.
Orākei is home to Ngati Whatua Ōrākei and the site of the iwi’s marae, church and urupa (cemetery). More Māori heritage can be found on Ōhinerau/Mt Hobson in Remuera, which was originally used as a pa.
For nature-lovers, the Ōrākei Local Board area also encompasses Waiatarua Reserve, the biggest urban wetland restoration project in New Zealand, and the Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve, along with numerous parks.
Families can enjoy the many playgrounds upgraded by the board, including Shore Road Reserve, Patteson Avenue Reserve and Roberta Reserve, or take a stroll along the board’s recently completed walkways at Hobson Bay and Ōrākei Basin.
“We are lucky to have such a diverse range of features, destinations and history in our area,” says Ōrākei Local Board chair Desley Simpson.
“We are proud to host so many visitors to our beautiful coastline and town centres, while also working to provide an enhanced environment and facilities for residents.”
