Te Oneone Rangatira / Muriwai Beach will once again be vehicle free this summer for the upcoming peak holiday period.

Auckland Council and Auckland Transport are preparing to close the two beach access roads – Coast Road through Muriwai Regional Park, and Wilsons Road to the north – from Wednesday 31 December until Monday 12 January 2026.

This will effectively stop vehicles from entering and driving along the beach except when an emergency response or rescue operation is required.

Regional Parks Western Principal Ranger Dave Markham says the measure aims to improve safety and reduce fire risk in the area during the busiest time of year.

“It takes a region to help care for the magnificent assets this wild, dynamic Muriwai coastline holds. We need everyone to help protect the nature and wildlife that live here, as well as keeping people safe when exploring and enjoying the landscape,” says Dave.

“Concern always arises over summer due to the popularity of Muriwai as an accessible west coast destination – not to mention the dry conditions we’ve come to expect.”

Access to the popular west coast surf spot will remain available through all entry points on both foot and horseback.

Gates will secure both the Coast Road and Wilson Road beach access points, with barriers, signage and security in place to remind drivers.

NZ Police are working alongside Auckland Council and NZTA this summer to patrol the beach and encourage responsible driving behaviour.
