Speed limit change proposed for Browns Bay Town Centre
Auckland Transport (AT) are proposing a speed limit change to 40km/h in the Browns Bay Town Centre.
New safety improvements are approved for construction within the Browns Bay Town Centre. When completed, they will create safer streets to help you get to your school, local shops and the places you love in a way that is good for you, your whānau and the environment.
To support the installation of the new safety measures, AT are proposing to change the speed limit in the Browns Bay Town Centre to 40km/h.
The community supported the new safety installations, and many suggested a lower speed limit to enhance the beachside shopping area.
The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has requested the community is consulted prior to a final decision being made on changing the speed limit.

Benefits to the community
Working together with the new safety installations, a 40km/h speed limit will
- Make it safer and easier for everyone getting around on foot, by bike, or scooter so everyone can enjoy the town centre.
- Give drivers more time to see people walking and cycling, making it safer for everyone to navigate the town centre.
- Improve visibility of people on foot, clear access & allow vehicles to turn more easily & safely too.
- Help reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
If the community supports the proposed speed limit change, the new speed limit will be introduced once the new safety measures are installed.
The proposed speed reduction is expected to:
- lower vehicle speeds in the town centre by a few km/h
- introduce a low travel time increase per street
- have an implementation cost varying from $500 to $4,500 per street.
Community consultation is open for six weeks until 28 November 2025. All community feedback will be considered prior to a final decision being made.
