Saturday 11 October, midday is the cut-off.

As soon as the clock strikes 12 o’clock, vote boxes across Tāmaki Makaurau will be sealed shut—each one holding the final voices of Aucklanders who made their choice in the nick of time. These last-minute ballots will be whisked away to the vote processing centre, where votes are carefully counted.

The race to shape Auckland’s future is officially on.

“By Saturday afternoon, Aucklanders will have voted to decide who will lead our city for the next three years,” says Lou-Ann Ballantyne, Auckland Council’s General Manager Governance and Engagement.

“Thank you in advance to everyone – candidates and voters who participated. We’re eager to meet and work with our newly elected members.

“This election is all about the future of Auckland. From transport and plans to climate action and community services, the people elected in a few days will shape the region’s direction for years to come,” says Ms Ballantyne.

First glimpse: who’s leading?

Progress results – Saturday 11 October, after 3pm

Just a few hours after voting closes, Aucklanders will get their first look at who’s ahead. The progress results will reveal vote counts for mayoral, councillor, and local board candidates—based on ballots returned from 9 September to 10 October. This early count is expected to reflect 80–90 percent of all votes.

Expect surprises. Expect close calls.

Some candidates may be neck-and-neck, with only a handful of votes separating them. And for those standing in multiple races, early leads could shift dramatically once the final count is in.

But remember: these results are provisional. Saturday morning’s votes are still being counted and special votes are still to be validated.

The plot thickens

Preliminary results – Monday 13 October

The suspense builds. Monday’s preliminary results will include votes cast on Saturday morning and bring the total count to around 95–98 percent. But with special votes still outstanding, even frontrunners aren’t certain.

In tight races, margins may shift. A candidate leading today could be overtaken tomorrow.

The final reveal

Official results declared – Friday 17 October

This is it. The final count includes every verified vote, including special votes. The official results will confirm Auckland’s new mayor, ward councillors and local board members.

From Saturday 18 October, the newly elected leaders officially take office. Expect congratulatory calls, celebrations, and a flurry of activity as Auckland’s new Governing Body prepares for its first meeting on Friday 31 October at the Auckland Town Hall.

Newly elected local boards, responsible for governing our local board areas, will also hold their inaugural meetings over the next few weeks to swear in members and get straight to work.
