The North Shore will soon be a safer place for walkers and cyclists, thanks to several road safety projects already underway or being investigated.

In Takapuna, a new raised pedestrian crossing has created a safe connection to the beach and the nearby playground.

On Hurstmere Road, a new streetscape will have improved road design and stormwater infrastructure, and will provide good access to the area. Upgrades will include a dedicated southbound cycle lane, a raised crossing in place of the pedestrian refuge island on Anzac Street (just up from the Hurstmere Road roundabout) and a redesign of the Lake Road/Hurstmere Road intersection.

In Birkenhead, community feedback has inspired a new pedestrian crossing outside 100 Hinemoa Street, which will be made a priority for construction in the new financial year.

It will be pram friendly and include new traffic islands. The existing refuge island at 102-108 Hinemoa Street will be removed as part of these works.

Councillor Richard Hills says pedestrian-friendly infrastructure improvements are vital to help people to get around without cars.

“The new crossings help make walking and cycling safer and easier, especially for the youngest and oldest members of our community, who rely on safe crossings to move around their neighbourhoods,” he says.​

Councillor Chris Darby says he and Cr Hills are championing a number of similar improvements across the North Shore.

“When we provide effective infrastructure, more people take the opportunity to walk and cycle around,” he says.

“The more we make this a safe and convenient option, the more the road space is free for those who need it most.
