World Parks Week runs from 29 April to 7 May. Here are some of the things that make our parks among the best in the world.
1. Auckland's regional parks comprise 40,000 hectares, which is more than twice the size of Waitematā Harbour.
2. The city's oldest park is Auckland Domain. It was established as a public reserve in 1843 by Governor Robert FitzRoy.
3. There are more than 14,000 different plant groups at the Auckland Botanic Gardens.
4. The Hillary Trail in the Waitākere Ranges is Auckland's first multi-day tramp and covers 77km of native bush, rocky shores and black-sand beaches.
5. Together we volunteer over 65,000 hours a year in our parks working on planting days and beach clean-ups, supporting events and helping with biosecurity.
6. There are more than 300km of sandy beaches in Auckland's parks network – that's more than the distance between Auckland and Kaitaia.
7. We have 20 great kiwi baches across our regional parks ranging from beachfront to back country.
8. More than 2.3 million people use our sports fields over winter.
9. Waikumete Cemetery is the only cemetery in Australasia to be awarded the prestigious international Green Flag Award, which means it's among the best in the world.
