Ponsonby Road pedestrian improvements project begins

Auckland Transport (AT) and the Waitematā Local Board are making improvements at eight intersections along Ponsonby Road to make the area more attractive and pedestrian-friendly. The improvements reflect local feedback and the Board’s Ponsonby Road Plan.
A range of planned improvements
Raised tables will be built to slow traffic. There will also be upgraded and wider footpaths, new street furniture and trees, better lighting and two new pedestrian crossings.
Expected completion dates
Stage one of the project began on Monday 27 February at the Lincoln Street intersection and is expected to take three weeks to complete. The Lincoln Street intersection will be closed for the duration of the work.
The remainder of the works are expected to be completed between mid-March and July at the Anglesea Street, Brown Street, Collingwood Street, Douglas Street, Mackelvie Street, Norfolk Street and Pollen Street intersections.
Enhancing the Ponsonby Road environment
“This is an innovative project that will create a continuous walking experience along a celebrated destination road,” says Waitematā Local Board chair Pippa Coom.
“We are pleased to partner with Auckland Transport on a project that prioritises people and has resulted in design-led improvements following feedback from the community and business owners.”
AT Major Capital Group Manager Andrew Scoggins says, “As well as improving safety for pedestrians, the look and feel of this area of Ponsonby will be greatly enhanced. Aucklanders will be able to enjoy a more vibrant and social environment along Ponsonby Road, while local retailers and businesses will also benefit.”
The project is being delivered by Downer NZ, who are working proactively with the local business association and affected residents to minimise disruption during construction.
