Another busy month for city centre upgrades
Continuing the trend for 2016, August has been another busy month for the construction sector, with activity focused on preparation for City Rail Link (CRL) construction.
Demolition continues
The demolition of the Downtown Shopping Centre continues, with the northern half of the site cleared and internal demolition of the southern half of the site ongoing.
Tunnel portals under construction
Fletcher Construction has been busy constructing the two deep pile stub walls at each point where the City Rail Link rail tunnelsintercept the Commercial Bay development site, at Lower Queen Street and at the Albert Street and Customs Street corner.
These two stub walls will eventually form the CRL tunnel portals. Also underway are preparation works for deep diaphragm walls (or D-Walls) that will form the outer perimeter of the Commercial Bay site. The first wall will be constructed along the edge of the HSBC building.
Traffic changes on Albert and Customs streets
As of Monday 5 September, traffic on Customs Street passing through the Albert Street intersection was reduced to one lane each way to enable further preparation works for the CRL.
Planning for the cut and cover tunnel section from Lower Albert Street to Wyndham Street is well advanced, and in September a large Soil Mec piling rig will be delivered.
The piling rig has been shipped from Italy and once in place, its size and scale will be a sight to behold.
