The weekend looks like it could be a great one for getting outdoors but it is important to keep those excursions local.
The country is still at Alert Level 3 and for the Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland region that means many of the regional parks’ facilities remain closed.
“While we all like to get out and enjoy the outdoors particularly when the weather is so good, it is important to restrict our movements in adherence to the Ministry of Health recommendations,” says Alf Filipaina, Chair of Auckland Council’s Parks, Arts, Communities and Events Committee.
“That means staying local and exploring the parks that are close to your home.”
Auckland Council’s Acting Head of Parks Services, Rachel Kelleher, says it is necessary to remember that under Alert Level 3 a few restrictions continue to apply.
“Facilities in our regional parks remain closed including most toilets and our visitor centres. There is also no vehicle access with gates being shut.”
While parks remain open for exercise, access is limited to those Aucklanders who live nearby and can walk or cycle there.
Alf Filipaina says that doesn’t mean Aucklanders have to be stuck at home.
“With over 4000 parks in the Auckland region, all our whānau and aiga have plenty of options to explore that are close to their homes.
“Try exploring somewhere new in your local area, whether that is in your neighbourhood or in your suburb.”
Rachel Kelleher agrees.
“Keeping it local is the safest and best thing to do during Alert Level 3. You never know what you will find in your local area.”
