New recycling bins are coming to Rodney, west Auckland and the North Shore

New recycling service

Auckland’s goal to have consistent waste services for households across the region is a step closer, with the roll-out of new recycling bins in the north and west.

More than 210,000 households in legacy Rodney, North Shore and Waitakere are set to receive new 240L bins between 4 April and 30 June, bringing residents in these areas in line with most other Auckland households, which already have 240L bins.

The first service using the new bins will be on 1 July.

End to separate cardboard, paper collections

The new bins will replace crates in legacy Rodney, and smaller 140L bins in North Shore and Waitākere. With greater capacity for more recyclable items, cardboard and paper no longer need to be separated - they can all go in the new bin. Separate collections for these items will cease at the end of June.

As well as paper and cardboard, fruit and juice cartons such as Tetrapaks ® will also go in the bins, along with other recyclables including glass and plastic containers and bottles and aluminium cans. Collections will be fortnightly.

Regional Policy and Strategy Committee chair, Councillor George Wood, says the new bins and service changes are another key milestone in transforming Auckland's waste services, as outlined in the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

Consistent service across Auckland

“Moving to consistent waste services is a core promise we have made to Aucklanders, so that everyone has the same choices,” he says.

“The changes will also benefit householders and communities. Putting all recyclables into one bin will make it easier for people to recycle right, while having paper in the bins will help to reduce loose litter in our streets.

“The waste team has previously implemented similar recycling changes in legacy Manukau, Auckland City and Papakura and I am confident this prior experience will stand us in good stead with this roll out.”

The cost for the roll-out is included in the targeted waste rate.

The council is also planning changes to collection days to improve the efficiency of collections for now and the future. The changes will affect most residents. More information on collection day changes will be made available as part of the bin roll out.

Key dates for roll out of the service:

4 April 2016 – onwards: new recycling bins distributed to legacy Rodney and northern North Shore
2 May 2016 – onwards: new recycling bins distributed to remaining parts of legacy North Shore
30 May 2016 – onwards: new bins distributed to legacy Waitākere and western part of legacy Rodney
1 July 2016 - Collections using new bins commence in all three areas.

Auckland Council’s vision is to move to regionally consistent services for household waste streams, while ensuring the services are efficient and designed to reduce waste to landfill.

Other changes include:

  • Introducing a regionally consistent inorganics collection service – already underway
  • Introducing kerbside recycling into rural Franklin
  • Commencing a new urban food waste collection service from 2018 (Note: trials of the service are underway in parts of North Shore and South Auckland)
  • Transitioning to a consistent ‘pay as you throw’ council bin system by 2019/20.

Legacy Rodney

  • New bins will be delivered from April
  • Bins will replace crates
  • Collections will be fortnightly
  • Paper and cardboard will no longer be collected separately and should be put loose, not tied, in the new bin
  • Most people will have a new recycling collection day
  • To change from crates to bins, a new fleet of automated trucks will replace manual collections, so we will not be able to empty crates after June
  • The council will share our new collection schedule with rubbish collectors in coming weeks and months
Residents should keep using their old crates and paper and cardboard collections until the end of June

Legacy North Shore

  • New bins will be delivered from April (in northern North Shore only) and through May for everyone else
240L bins will replace 140L bins
  • Collections will continue to be fortnightly
  • Paper and cardboard will no longer be collected separately and should be put loose, not tied, in the new bin
  • Most people will have a new rubbish and recycling collection day
  • Residents should keep using their old bins and paper and cardboard collections until the end of June

Legacy Waitākere

  • New bins will be delivered from May through to June
  • 240L bins will replace 140L bins
  • Collections will continue to be fortnightly
  • Paper and cardboard will no longer be collected separately and should be put loose, not tied, in the new bin
  • Most people will have a new rubbish and recycling collection day
  • Residents should keep using their old bins and paper and cardboard collections until the end of June.
