이메일 작성은 물론 문자 메시지도 보낼 수 없다. 오로지 통화 기능만 지원한다. 2015년 펀딩 사이트 킥스타터에서 첫선을 보인 ‘더 라이트 폰(The Light Phone)’ 이야기다.
6일(현지시간) 더버지에 따르면 더 라이트 폰은 펀딩 당시 구매 대기자에 지난 1월 초도물량이 공급된 데 이어, 이달 말부터 추가 구매 예약자에 출하될 예정이다.
신용카드 크기의 이 휴대폰은 최소한의 기능과 디자인을 모토로 한 제품이다. 음성통화, 시간 표기, 9개 전화번호 저장이 이 휴대폰으로 할 수 있는 모든 일이다.
안드로이드 운영체제를 탑재했지만, 불필요한 기능은 모두 버리고 기기가 구동될 수 있는 부분만 남겼다.
최신 스마트폰은 물론 다양한 종류의 액세서리에 탑재된 블루투스 기능도 없다. 때문에 다른 기기와 연동해 사용할 수 없다.
2G 폰인 까닭에 통신비가 매우 비싼 미국에서도 한 달 6천원 가량밖에 요금이 들지 않는다.
디자인도 기능처럼 특히 갖춘 것이 없다. 카드 크기의 바 형태가 모든 디자인이다. 색상도 블랙과 화이트 등 무채색 두가지 뿐이다.
무게는 38.5그램, 가로 53.98mm, 세로 85.6mm, 두께 4mm로 최소한의 기능을 갖출 수 있는 최소한의 제품 크기다.
배터리 용량에 대해서도 회사 홈페이지에 별도 언급은 없다. 대기 상태에서 최대 4일까지 버티고 음성통화시 최소 45분, 최대 90분간 이용할 수 있다고 한다.
회사 측은 현재 추가 구매자를 위한 사전 주문 예약을 받고 있다. 휴대폰 가격은 150달러다. 미국 지역을 대상으로 5월 말까지 배송을 마친다는 계획이다.
제한된 주파수 대역의 2G GSM 통신 방식을 지원, 국내 이통사의 2G 서비스게 가입해 이용하는 것은 불가능하다.
미국에서도 T모바일을 통해서만 이용 가능하다. 그마저도 T모바일이 가진 해당 대역 주파수 이용기간은 2020년까지다.
