7,927 community cases; 393 hospitalisations; 12 in ICU; 27 deaths

Today we are reporting 7,927 community cases, 393 current hospitalisations, and 27 deaths.

The seven-day rolling average of community case numbers today is 6,059 – last Thursday, it was 6,937.

COVID-19 deaths

Today we are sadly reporting the deaths of 27 people with COVID-19. Twenty-two of these people have died in the past 5 days, and 5 have died since 29 March.

Today’s reported deaths take the total number of publicly reported deaths with COVID-19 to 1,294 and the seven-day rolling average of reported deaths is 14.

Of the people whose deaths we are reporting today; nine were from the Auckland region, three were from Waikato, one was from Lakes DHB area, one from Taranaki; one from MidCentral, five from the Wellington region; one from Nelson-Marlborough; four from Canterbury and two from the Southern region.

One person was in their 40s; two in their 60s, seven in 70s; nine in their 80s and eight were aged over 90.

Of these people, 14 were women and 13 were men.

This is a very sad time for whānau and friends and our thoughts and condolences are with them.

Out of respect, we will be making no further comment on these deaths.

Vaccinations administered in New Zealand  

  • Vaccines administered to date: 4,027,837 first doses; 3,979,900 second doses; 32,488 third primary doses; 2,664,971 booster doses: 263,291 paediatric first doses and 126,465 paediatric second doses  
  • Vaccines administered yesterday: 54 first doses; 64 second doses; 29 third primary doses; 918 booster doses; 24 paediatric first doses and 180 paediatric second doses.

People vaccinated

  • All ethnicities (percentage of eligible people aged 12+): 4,054,060 first dose (96.3%); 4,005,424 second dose (95.2%), 2,644,734 boosted (of the 18+ population) (72.7% of those eligible)  
  • Māori (percentage of eligible people aged 12+): 521,398 first dose (91.3%); 504,644 second dose (88.4%), 237,851 boosted (of the 18+ population) (55.8% of those eligible)  
  • Pacific Peoples (percentage of eligible people aged 12+): 282,147 first dose (98.4%); 277,361 second dose (96.7%), 142,547 boosted (of the 18+ population) (59.3% of those eligible)  
  • 16- to 17-year-old booster uptake (all ethnicities): 11,426 boosted (11.9% of those eligible)
  • 16- to 17-year-old booster uptake (Māori): 1,059 boosted (5.9% of those eligible)
  • 16- to 17-year-old booster uptake (Pacific Peoples): 603 boosted (6.2% of those eligible)
  • 5 to 11-year-olds all ethnicities: 260,098 first dose (54.6%); 123,292 second dose (25.9%)
  • 5 to 11-year-olds - Māori: 41,055 first dose (35.5%); 14,386 second dose (12.4%)
  • 5 to 11-year-olds - Pacific Peoples: 23,705 first dose (48%); 7,624 second dose (15.4%).

Note that the number for “People vaccinated” differs slightly from “Vaccines administered” as it includes those that have been vaccinated overseas.

Please note, the Ministry of Health’s daily reported cases may differ slightly from those reported at a DHB or local public health unit level. This is because of different reporting cut off times and the assignment of cases between regions, for example when a case is tested outside their usual region of residence. Total numbers will always be the formal daily case tally as reported to the WHO.
