Auckland Emergency Management team delivering water to Piha. If you don't have access to clean drinking water, please call 0800 22 22 00.

Auckland Emergency Management Director John Dragicevich says that around 15,000 litres of water is being delivered to people without access to it.

“We’ve arranged for 1,200 1.5 litre bottles of water to be taken to both Piha and Karekare to help the people who have been without it since the storm hit. Anyone in Piha who is unable to get water by other means can go and pick up bottled water from the Piha Firestation.

“Please only take what you need, so that there is enough to go around. Don’t worry – if the power doesn’t come back on, these areas will be resupplied.”

Metservice has issued a severe thunderstorm and weather watch for the Auckland region for Friday night and Saturday. Keep an eye on the weather during the weekend, secure loose outdoor items and clear your gutters.

“We are not expecting the weather conditions to be as impactful over the next day, but we still want our communities to take care,” he says.

“In addition, by the end of the day Auckland Emergency Management will have delivered portables toilets to 35 affected households.

“We’d also like to remind people to keep checking in on their friends, family and neighbours to see if they need any assistance. Think about what they might need, and if power continues to be out over the weekend consider offering space in your home.”

"This means calling them if you can, going around to see them or if you can’t get there, asking if someone else you know can go and check on them. When you visit take what they might need: things like hot food, clean water and blankets,” he says.

Power update

Vector’s next priority is the pockets of individual homes still without power due to failures on the low voltage network.

This work, and the restoration of hot water pilot lines, will take until later next week.

For up to date information visit Vector and Counties Power.

All downed power lines should be treated as live. Stay well away and don’t attempt to cut or move trees that are in contact with lines.

More bad weather expected

Auckland is likely to experience another burst of heavy rain and gales on Monday.

Keep an eye on the weather during the weekend and when it is safe to do so secure loose outdoor items and clear your gutters. Also it might be a good time to restock your emergency supplies such as fuel for generators, gas bottles for barbeques, and batteries for your torches.

Power

Vector has brought in extra crews from outside the region who have been working through the night to restore power.

For up to date information visit Vector and Counties Power websites.

All downed power lines should be treated as live. Stay well away and don’t attempt to cut or move trees that are in contact with lines.

Medical health and advice

Contact your GP if you are concerned about health issues and contact your health provider if you need support like home support services including for support you currently receive.

Trees

Auckland Council contractors will be working around the clock to make roads safe and manage emergency tree works across the region. Contractors are prioritising jobs that pose immediate safety issues.

Trees will be put on berms and mulched at a later date, so contractors can move on to higher priority jobs. This may take weeks to clear.

Report trees down on public land to Auckland Council on 09 301 0101.

Information about property damage

If your property is damaged, call 111 in an emergency.

Please call 09 301 0101 to report trees down on public land and around the roading network. Care must be taken around downed power lines.

Green waste shouldn’t go in your rubbish bin. If you find any green waste or organic debris on your property, we recommend contacting your local garden waste company, who can arrange for a collection. Alternatively, people can take this waste to their local transfer station or community recycling centre. Further details can be found on the council’s website.

Traffic and transport updates

Follow Auckland Transport and NZTA for up-to-date travel information.

Motorways are open, as is the majority of the roading network.

Road closures and partial closures

Some closed roads have now reopened. Get the latest updates on closed and partially closed roads at at.govt.nz.

What to do after a power outage

Keep your fridge and freezer closed to keep food chilled.

Throw away any frozen food that has been exposed to temperatures above 4°C for two hours or more or that has an unusual odour, colour or texture. When in doubt, throw it out.

If food in the freezer is colder than 4°C and has ice crystals on it, you can refreeze it.

Contact your doctor if you’re concerned about medications having spoiled.

Restock your emergency kit with fresh batteries, canned foods and other supplies.

If your power is expected to be out for a day, conserve your hot water.
