Auckland Council is offering a free White Night programme.
Between 6pm and midnight on Saturday 18 March, art will spill from galleries onto the streets as the Auckland Arts Festival brings global artistic movement White Night to Auckland.
Auckland Council is offering its own free White Night programme called Arts in the Hood to take art enthusiasts around four community arts centres and other public spaces.
Manager of Arts and Culture Programme Planning Anna Cameron is excited about the events on offer.
“Fresh Gallery Ōtara is exhibiting When Can I See You Again?, a group show of seven artists working in diverse mediums. Between 3pm and 5pm there will be a weaving circle and discussion with the artists that is open to the public. It’s also the departing point of the Arts in the Hood bus tour which will begin its first lap of the gallery circuit at 5pm.
"From there, the bus will stop in at Māngere Arts Centre – Nga Tohu o Uenuku for the opening night of Ko Tonga Mo'unga ki he Loto: Tonga's Strength-Hold Is Its Heart by Emily Mafile’o. This exhibition is a world premiere of a brand new photography series which celebrates the 150th anniversary of Tupou College Toloa in Tonga. The series takes a unique journey back to Toloa to honour a beloved school alongside its past pupils.”
The Bradley Lane Illuminated project in Glen Innes was a feature of last year’s White Night and this year it will be further enhanced by projection artist Tom Bogdanowicz at Te Oro.
“Visitors can take a guided walking tour of Glen Innes street art murals led by local art entrepreneur Gary Silipa. For one night only, artists will take over the Glen Innes Town Centre to surprise and delight audiences,” say Cameron.
“One of the final stops is Studio One Toi Tū in Ponsonby which will showcase a diverse range of works including Negin Dastgheib, Sarah Smith, Yi Pei Jacqueline Macleod and pop-up exhibition Works on Paper ... Marks of Existence by Jules Silk.
“Collectively, these events offer Aucklanders the opportunity to celebrate and experience the diversity of our unique arts community."
