Jessica:

Jessica: Jenny,

What motivates people to join the NZ Police? Interview with Constable Jenny Su

NZ Police is recruiting Asian Police Officers and I am honoured to have the opportunity to interview Constable Jenny Su from the Auckland Central Police Station.

Jessica: Constable Su, where are you originally from and how long have you been in NZ?

Jenny: I am originally from Taiwan and moved to New Zealand when I was 12. I have been in New Zealand for over 20 years now.

Jessica: When did you join NZ Police?

Jenny: My Police career started on 26 January 2015, when I became a member of Wing 290 at the Royal New Zealand Police College.

Jessica: Why did you decide to join NZ Police?

Jenny: I was studying law at Auckland University and was given an opportunity to go on a ride-along with the Police. During that ride-along, I had an amazing experience seeing the Police in action and how they can make a positive difference. I realised then that this was the profession I wanted to be part of. I am a firm believer that you have to love what you do, after all we spend the majority of our life time working. You might as well do what you love!

Jessica: During your preparation, what would you say was your biggest challenge?

Jenny: The initial challenges I faced were my physical fitness and swimming requirements. I played sports when I was in high school, however as time went by, other things took precedent over exercising. So finding the motivation to reach the fitness and swimming requirements was rather difficult.

Jessica: How did you overcome them?

Jenny: I was fortunate to be part of the Auckland Safety Patrol group and was encouraged by the support you gave us.  You and the Police Physical Trainer Officer Don Coster, provided us with the right tools and advice on how to train smartly and keep focussed.  I recommend training with a couple of friends to keep each other motivated.

Jessica: Jenny, you have a smaller build compared to other applicants?  Did you worry that you would not meet the physical requirements to join the police?

Jenny: At first glance I may not look like the stereotypical Police officer.  I am roughly 5”2. Policing is about communication and conflict resolution, do not let your height or size influence your decision. You are as tall as you feel!!!

When I was going to jump over that wall for the first time in front of my colleagues in college, many of them offered me advice and encouragement as they thought I would struggle, I had great pleasure in seeing their faces when I leapt over that wall with ease. It’s about technique.

Police want you because you are unique. You can bring your different skill sets into the job based on your life experience.

Jessica: Your confidence is very inspiring.  Many Asian people think that their lack of height or their age may prevent them from applying to join the police. However as you know they are no longer barriers because there are no height or age restrictions. As long as they can pass the Police academic, psychometric, physical tests and vetting.  I remember that you were one of the very bright ASP members, your English was good and you have a very good sense of humour,  you would always make us laugh.

Jenny: Thank you Jessica. I enjoy making people laugh. I find it helpful to use humour to build rapport with people. It makes you approachable. After all policing is all about using communication skills to build rapport with people to de-escalate a stressful situation or gather information.

Jessica: Is there any incident that you attended while on duty that is especially significant for you?

Jenny: Once I attended a domestic dispute at an address well known for having domestic disputes. A neighbour had reported shouting coming from the address. On arrival, we were met by the female occupant who stood behind the fence.  Immediately she became aggressive shouting and swearing at us, telling us to leave and that our presence was scaring her children.

Jessica: So how did you get across to her in the end?

Jenny: We were taught in Police College to always enter a situation in a calm and collected manner. This may help an already agitated person to calm down.

I spoke to her in a respectful and calm voice and advised her that we were simply there to ensure her and her children’s safety. After a couple of minutes of reassurance, she calmed down and even told me that she really appreciated us for coming to check on them. It goes to show how important it is to enter a situation calmly and always treat everyone with respect.  This will leave you room to react accordingly should things escalate.

Jessica: So what you’re saying is that the practical and communication skills that you were taught at the Police College have been very helpful when you are attending incidents such as the one you described. Would you recommend the Police as a career to other people.

Jenny: Yes for sure, if you are seeking an exciting career where every day is different, and you are keen to help and make a difference, this is the career for you.

You are able to move to various areas within the organisation. The opportunities are endless.

Jessica: What attitude should one have in order to reach their goal?

Jenny: Physical training requires self-discipline. You have to take into account that your physical conditions will fluctuate. Some days are better than others, but do not be discouraged if you are having a not so good training day. Just hang in there, train consistently and embrace the pain, because it’s worth it!!!

Jessica: Thank you Jenny for sharing your thoughts.  I’m sure your story will encourage Asian people who are thinking of the NZ Police to give it a try even if they have reservations about it at first.

If you wish to learn more about joining NZ Police, we are having an Auckland Recruitment Seminar on 09 July 2016 at the Fickling Center 546 Mt Albert Rd, Three Kings from 10am to 12pm.  Entrance is free and there is lots of parking.  Parents are welcome too.
